Emma Moriarty of Port Jefferson Station and Oswego Volleyball Down Cortland in SUNYAC Pool Play

2016 Oct 8

Emma Moriarty of Port Jefferson Station and Oswego State volleyball opened their own round of SUNYAC Pool Play with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 19-25, 27-25) over Cortland in Max Ziel Gymnasium on Friday evening. Oswego's victory boosts the squad's overall record to 10-8 but more importantly bumps its conference record back to .500 (2-2). The Red Dragons fall to 11-10 on the year and 1-3 in league action with Friday's falter.

As a team, Oswego owned the statistical advantage, hitting more than double Cortland's percentage (.184 - .081). The Lakers also had five more team blocks (13-8), 13 more kills (57-44) and 16 more assists (54-38).

That domination was managed by several Lakers who had either career- or season-best outings. On offense, Ariel Murawski and Emma Moriarty each had season-high kills, both missing their career marks by just one. Murawski clobbered a match-high 18 kills while her senior teammate posted 15. Both hit .250 or better as well (Murawski .341, Moriarty .250).

Setting those monstrous evenings were the senior tandem of Lauren Edwards and Lindsey Champitto. The pair split 50 assists evenly, with Champitto's 25 helpers representing a new career-high and Edwards' setting a new season-best.

Moriarty (16) and Edwards (10) aided in the passing effort with Jessica Long pacing the way with 22 digs.

Defensively, another career-high was set by Alison Sullivan with her denying 10 Red Dragons attack attempts. Also finishing with multiple blocks were Murawski (4), Meaghan Roefs (3) and Megan Russell (3).

Oswego will close hosting pool play with two matches on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. with Buffalo State. Prior to its second match at 12:30 p.m. with Oneonta, the Lakers will recognize their senior class.
