Gartland of Webster Helps Oswego to Triple Digits and Win

2016 Nov 19

Brandan Gartland of Webster helped the nationally-ranked Oswego State basketball team cruised to a 104-68 victory over SUNY Maritime in the Max Ziel Tournament on Friday night at home. Oswego's win is its first of the young season, improving to 1-1 on the year while Maritime is also 1-1 with the loss.

The 104 points is the first time Oswego has surpassed the triple-figure plateau since a 100-98 double-overtime victory against Potsdam on Jan. 25, 2000. Another milestone by the Lakers on Friday was the tying the single-game team record for 3-pointers made. Oswego made 18-of-37 from beyond the arc, tying the mark it set on Feb. 13 of this year in a 90-74 triumph at then-No. 22 Plattsburgh.

Over the course of the 40 minute contest, 12 different Lakers recorded points, paced by Brian Sortino's 19 in just 22 minutes of action. Two other Oswego players ascended into double figures, with Ian Schupp totaling 14 and Tim Marshall scoring 11. Marshall also led the team on the glass, collecting an Oswego-best eight boards.

Next in the scoring column was Jamir Ferebee with nine points followed by a trio of eight-point scorers: Brandan Gartland, Keith Tyson and Pat Caruso. Tyler Pierre and Nick Fazio both finished with seven points while Mykelle Krecko and Louis Avellino each had five. Rounding out the Laker scoring was Matt Crockett, as the senior cashed in a trey.

As a team, Oswego shot 54.2% (39-for-72) from the field, outrebounded Maritime 51-27, including a 14-4 margin on the offensive glass. Those offensive caroms made way for an 18-3 Laker edge in second-chance points.

It was all Lakers early, opening the tilt on a 15-4 run over 5:24 behind eight points from Sortino. The Lakers were 5-for-12 over that stretch, including 3-for-6 from deep. Oswego continued to build its lead over the first half, extending its advantage to as many as 24. At the break, the Lakers held a sizeable 60-38 spread over the Privateers. Oswego's 60 first-half points is its most in a period since Nov. 19, 2013. On that date, the Lakers scored 64 in the opening stanza on Ithaca College in a 99-73 victory.

In the first game of the tournament, SUNY Canton downed Elmira 85-76, setting up a 2 p.m. consolation game of Elmira and Maritime on Saturday. Oswego and Canton will battle for the championship immediately following the conclusion of the consolation contest. Tentative tip time is 4 p.m.
