Mazzella of Peru Helps Oswego Women's Basketball Earn First Win

2016 Nov 30

Mary Mazzella of Peru helped the Oswego State women's basketball team dropped the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton 71-46 on Tuesday night in Max Ziel Gymnasium.

It is the first victory of the young season for the Lakers (1-4), while Canton is still searching for a tally in the win column (0-5). Oswego jumped out to an early lead, starting the contest on a 7-0 run over 1:54. The Kangaroos responded, however, scoring nine of the games next 15 points to cut the Laker advantage to 13-9 at the end of the first quarter. In the next 10-minute period, Oswego gained control of the tilt, outscoring Canton 30-13 to take a sizeable 43-22 margin into halftime. During the second quarter, Oswego was 10-for-16 from the field, 8-for-11 from the charity stripe, stole the possession five times and had eight different players score.

It was much of the same in the second stanza, as the Lakers held a 20-or-more point lead for all but 1:22 of the third and fourth quarters.

Senior Heather Hebert was one of four Lakers to score in double-figures, posting a team-high 17 points on 4-for-9 (44.4%) shooting from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 night at the free-throw line. The forward also had a team-high in assists (5) and steals (4).

Also in double-figures with 12 points was classmate Mary Mazzella, going along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Juniors Courtney Ameele (11) and Zana Dillard (10) rounded out the Lakers with double digits in the point column, combining for 21.

Sophomore Rachael Windhausen filled the stat sheet on the evening, scoring eight points, collecting a team-high seven rebounds, distributing four assists and blocking three Canton shot attempts. Windhausen was nearly perfect from the floor, posting a 4-for-5 (80.0%) night.

On defense, Oswego held Canton to below 30.0% shooting from both the field and the 3-point line. The stingy defense also forced 24 Kangaroo turnovers, resulting in 14 steals and a 24-7 advantage in points off turnovers.

Oswego will return to the hardwood at 4 p.m. on Saturday when it hosts Cortland for the SUNYAC opener.
