Waterstreet of Northville Helps Oswego Past Potsdam

2016 Nov 19

Christopher Waterstreet of Northville helped the No. 4/5 Oswego State men's ice hockey team continued its season-opening win streak with a 6-0 victory at Potsdam on Friday night in Maxcy Arena. Oswego extends the winning streak to 6-0 on the year and 4-0 in conference action. Potsdam drops to 2-3-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the SUNYAC.

Two milestones were reached by Lakers on Friday, starting with Shawn Hulshof. After a scoring change in Oswego's last contest reverted Hulshof back to 99 points, an assist in the second period against Potsdam gave the senior his elusive 100th point. Classmate Matt Zawadzki recorded his 12th-career shutout with 27 saves between the pipes, setting the new individual career mark for shutouts at Oswego. Zawadzki surpassed Andrew Hare's 11 that the goalie accumulated from 2010-2013.

After taking a one-goal lead into the second period behind a first-period Matt Galati tally, Oswego broke open the game. The Lakers' damage came all in a less than four-minute stretch, berating the Bears from 13:34 until 17:25. Freshman Mitch Emerson began the barrage with his first-collegiate goal on assists from Joey Davies and Jody Sullivan. Just short of two minutes later, senior Alex Botten went top shelf for his third of the year, giving Oswego a 3-0 advantage. Botten received assists from Hulshof and Kristoffer Brun on the score.

Oswego had to wait a whole 2:17 before marking its fourth tally of the night, this time with Davies and Emerson swapping roles. Emerson found Davies for the senior's first notch of the year, giving each a multiple-point night at 17:25 of the second.

In the third, the Lakers tacked on two for good measure, coming on a Stephen Johnson power-play goal and an even-strength tally from David Ferreira. Galati and Botten assisted on the former while senior classmates Chris Raguseo and Chris Waterstreet helped on the latter.

Special teams were excellent for the Lakers against the Bears, scoring on 50.0% (2-for-4) of its extra-man opportunities while holding Potsdam scoreless in its seven chances.

Oswego will stay in the North Country for a Saturday-night showdown with fierce rival and nationally-ranked Plattsburgh. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
